MOTION CAPTURE & ARTIFICIAL INTELLIGENCE

How does one take the brobdingnagian number of animated events and possibilities on a cricket field and harness those into the finger tips of a ten fingered gamer? It begins with a humble pen and paper attempt similar to making a harmless grocery list...

A cricket field typically presents around 18,000 sq. meters of grassy surface to the game and an average fielder would consider around 100 sq. meters as his personal space. Now say you could place a fielder anywhere, as you can in Cricket Revolution, leaving you with 180 different positions to place a fielder in, and close to an infinite number of combinations for your field settings.

Next you think about the many different ways the ball arrives at or near the fielder in these 100 plus positions. Skiers, blinders, rollers, bouncers, run awayers, stoppers - each demanding an action by the fielder based on his abilities, fielding position, other fielders standing nearby and whether the batsmen are attempting a run or not. How fast can the fielder run? How hard does he throw the ball? Can he dive and field this ball, or is he not talented enough? How quickly can he react based on his position? You soon realize that this is a complex problem of patterns that needs to be factored out and intelligentlly constructed into a manageable number of animations.
